THE IDEA

HoodShift is an exploratory R&D project designed to push character locomotion, dynamic cloth physics, and perspective shifts. Rather than relying on generic humanoid rigs, the project investigated how custom clothing physics (specifically dynamic hoodies and jackets) react to sudden vector changes, wall-runs, and high-velocity slides.

WHAT I BUILT

Executed a unified 3D-to-engine pipeline:

  • Blender Character Modeling: Authored character meshes (firststory_scene_1.blend) with custom UV mapping and subdivision surfaces.
  • Cloth Simulation Rigging: Designed cloth vertex groups and pinned weight maps simulating heavy fabric drag.
  • Unreal Engine Import & Chaos Cloth: Exported rigged FBX armatures into UE5 and configured Chaos Cloth physics parameters.
  • Locomotion Prototyping: Created testing obstacle courses to stress-test high-speed cornering and deformation.

THE HARD PART

Preventing extreme cloth mesh clipping through character elbows and thighs during rapid animation transitions, while keeping simulation performance lightweight enough for real-time play.

HOW I SOLVED IT

Tuned rigid body collision capsules along the skeleton hierarchy and adjusted cloth backstop distances, enforcing a strict minimum barrier between the character skin and outer clothing layers.

RESULT

A proven art-to-game pipeline validating stylized cloth physics and agile movement prototypes without geometry clipping.
